Asthma is defined as
chronic inflammatory condition of the respiratory tract associated with airway
hyper-responsiveness. It is largely of allergic origin. The airway of asthma
patients is very responsive to environmental particles leading to intermittent
airway obstruction. The symptoms include wheezing, chest tightness, difficult
breathing and cough. Asthma symptoms are often triggered by conditions like
exposure to dusts, fumes, pollens, house dust mite, some drugs, exercise etc.
Treatment for asthma starts with making the diagnosis by a qualified medical
doctor, getting some investigations. Generally, they are to be educated to
avoid the triggers known to cause these symptoms and commencing drugs that will
reverse the airway obstruction and eliminate the inflammation.
How can asthma
be detected in infants?
Infants with asthma
often present with difficulty with breathing, cough, noisy breathing
(wheezing). Some of them will present with allergic symptoms like eye itching,
nasal itching with excessive sneezing, throat itching etc. These symptoms are
often worse at night and early hours of the morning. When your child has these
symptoms, the best step will be to take the child to the clinic for proper
assessment by a qualified medical practitioner.
